چکیده

Responses of American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis), common yew (Taxus x media) and juniper (Juniperus communis) to enhanced UV-B irradiance were studied. Control plants were grown without UV treatment, but at identical PhaR and temperature regimes. Visual symptoms of the ultraviolet effect noted on Thuja shoots as brown/red discolouration were correlated with the accumulation of phenolic compounds. Flavonoid glycosides identified by the retention times and UV spectra to a small degree increased their intensity. however, the biggest changes referred to the appearance of two free flavonoids with retention times of 47.7 and 48.2, and these compounds belong to effective UV absorbers. no effects on the accumulation of colourless flavonoids, at negligible changes in total phenolics and almost no symptoms during 9-week UVirradiation in Taxus and Juniperus, indicate that in these species anatomical features and/or the constitutive phenolics might be responsible for low epidermal transmittance and for ultraviolet protection. Anthocyanins were not found in the examined conifers.

Applications of UV-B lighting to increase phenolic accumulation of Alo vera L. plants

Since supplemental UV-B radiation can provide a simple and economical alternative to increase phenolic compounds in plants, we evaluated the dynamic biological responses of Alo vera L. plants to different UV-B doses (10 and 30 kJ m−2 day−1). The experiment was performed on the basis of Completely Randomize Design with 4 independent replications. Under high light conditions (600 µmol m−2 s−1), U...

Response of three eastern tree species to supplemental UV-B radiation: leaf chemistry and gas exchange

Quantitative changes in foliar chemistry in response to UV-B radiation are frequently reported but less is known about the qualitative changes in putative UV-screening compounds. It has also not been conclusively shown whether qualitative differences in screening compounds or differences in localization patterns influence the sensitivity of plants to damage from UV-B radiation and there is some...

Changes in Physiological and Biochemical Parameters of Gourd (Cucurbita pepo L.) Two Varieties under Drought and UV-B Radiation. Nobar Hajihosseinlo*, Siavash Hosseini Sarghein and Rashid Jamei

It emerged recently that there is an inter-relationship between drought and Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in plant responses, in that both stresses provoke an oxidative burst. The objective of the present investigation was to study the effect of drought stress, UV-B radiation and the combined effects of UV-B and drought stresses on two cultivars of gourd seedling. The gourd plants were grown w...

Effect of UV-B radiation on photosynthetic pigments and UV-absorbing compounds of three different soybean cultivars (Glycine max L.).

The effects of UV-B radiation on the amount of chlorophyll a, b, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and polyphenols of three soybean cultivars was studied. After germination in the incubator, plants were put in pots of soil and during 3 weeks and irrigated with Hoagland solution every day. After 3 weeks, plants were exposed to UV-B for 20 min every day for a week. In each cultivar, UV-B red...

Ultraviolet-B radiation impacts light-mediated turnover of the photosystem II reaction center heterodimer in Arabidopsis mutants altered in phenolic metabolism.

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation can have a negative impact on the growth and development of plants. Plants tolerant to UV-B alleviate these effects using UV-screening pigments that reduce the penetration of UV-B into mesophyll tissue. Little is known about the relative contribution of specific phenolic compounds to the screening capacity of leaves. The D1 and D2 proteins constituting the photosy...
